Lesson One:

In Esperanto, words are built. They consist of a root word, then the part of speech.

Nouns end in -o.

Here are some examples:

cato = cat
hundo = dog
libro = book
viro = man
knabo = boy
filo = son
breto = shelf
planko = floor
plafono = ceiling
muro = wall
porto = door
fenestro = window

Here is a chat room where you can "meet" other Esperantists:
Chat

I find it really helps to practice communicating with other Esperantists who do not speak English at all. That allows me to see different ways Esperanto sentences can be formed, and different ways that concepts can be expressed.

Plus, it's a freeing feeling, to know that I don't have to communicate in just my native tongue! There are plenty of people around the world who have no desire to learn English, but who have learned Esperanto. And some of these people are very interesting!

Saluton! (Hello!)

I began learning Esperanto 3 years ago.

I had studied - or attempted to study - 3 languages in school. I took a year of Latin, a year and a half of Hebrew (both in high school and in college), and a semester of German in college.

I could not hold the most rudimentary conversation about the weather, or a cup of coffee, or anything else. I felt there was some horrible block to learning a language, for me.

Then my husband told me about Esperanto.

I studied it for 3 days. Then I found an Esperanto chat room. And immediately - I found I could communicate with people all around the world! I understood about 80% of what I read in that chat room (using a dictionary), and I could make myself understood as well!

I am still not an expert - I feel I will always be learning - but I can understand what I read in Esperanto, and others can understand me.

This blog is dedicated to helping others discover the Universal Language!
